Perfect timing for sun rays and good music before dreaded February - in my opinion, the worst month of the year.

It's been nice to start shredding tees again. When I stopped creating them last spring I had felt burnt out on the process and pretty shot down by some rough criticism received from the internet fashion sphere.
It's a new year and I really am trying to care less what people think and just do what feels right.

Not many pictures have been taken lately. All of my time this past week consisted of sitting around my Mama's house - eating turkey, mint chocolate chip cookies and watching movies. Yesterday, Stephen and I flew into Atlanta to hang with friends and attend our five night STS9 New Years run. Saturday night is going to be a serious dance party! Also, sooo excited - we're planning a trip to the Georgia Aquarium tomorrow... apparently it's the biggest in the world.

Mama gifted me an interchangeable crochet kit for Christmas. I've never worked with such small needles before, should be interesting for necklace making. Julia sent me the hot pink bag - a birthday present to myself and I am in love with it. Buttery soft leather and such a fun color.

If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen similar images and exclamation points over the weekend.
I came home from running errands Saturday morning to find a grocery bag on my front stoop with "Free Pottery" written on it... free stuff is always great - especially when it's handmade! Totally made my day.

On Sunday I found a can of hot pink spray paint buried in one of my craft supply (crap supply) bins and went a little crazy. The effect looks awesome, but the color can chip right off the glass - so I need to discover some kind of sealant or something.

Last week my Dad and I flew out to Phoenix to meet up with his family for Thanksgiving. It had been 6 years or more since I saw everyone. While at G-ma's I looked at a bunch of old photos, hung out with the cacti in her backyard and became educated on she and my step - grandfather Ray's pile of rocks. We went to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West one afternoon, which I really enjoyed - will share photos soon.

These past few weeks I've been taking the time to walk my orders to the post office instead of drive. Normally I feel rushed to get back home and work but my mind and body have been craving fresh air lately. A perfect time for it too, The Fan is always gorgeous in the fall. I'm sure it won't be long till we're freezing our noses off and I'll decide to drive but I'm enjoying this walking habit for now.

Can't believe it's November 3rd. How did this happen? The fall always flies by.

Halloween weekend was so much fun - my girlfriend Allie came to stay with me and we've been veggin out, painting nails and eating thai food... on a recent trip to Panama she picked up a wonderful little handmade souvenir for me - a red wooden necklace with dreamcatcher design in the middle. We haven't been all too productive around here this week but I did manage to shred a small order of No. 2 style scarves, currently traveling to The Feather's Edge Finery in Bend, Oregon.
Also, we discovered the blooming beauties above in the dumpster the other night. Kind of amusing... second-hand flowers and they've been making me so happy!

we dyed my dreads red (orange?) with henna. will definitely need a few more washes before it settles. not trying to make any rash decisions but i still want to cut them.
kate and will's "i employ magical thinking" print came in the mail and I love seeing it everyday when i sit down to work on the torch.
experimenting with synthetic opals. a lot of glass cracking and head scratching so far but i'm determined to figure it out...
on a dyeing rampage. been shredding a few scarves from these experiments and i'll be putting them in the shop over the weekend.
lastly - pretty shimmer and glitter piling up for holiday items i've been working on. can't wait to share this project soon!

As mentioned yesterday, I picked up a beautiful strand of vintage beads on our road trip and it inspired me to create something similar of my own. Strung on a soft white leather cord, the clear and lilac glass mimic the blue and white Venetian trade bead pattern with adjoining skunk bead in the middle.

I love the organic quality produced by working fast with bead mandrels.
Each bead has it's own special shape and hangs differently than the next.

Road Trip Part 5 : Frontier Plunder Antiques

Making our way through Utah towards Zion National Park (which is GORGEOUS by the way) we happened to pull over at Frontier Plunder Antiques. From the outside it looked like typical souvenir shops in the southwest but after walking through the front door, I was immediately in awe. The adobe house was built twenty years ago with the intent of creating the adjoining vintage shop by Harriet and her husband John.

Each time I picked something up Harriet could immediately tell me it's history and then some. I could have stayed there all day picking her brain. After much obsessing and jaw dropping, I purchased a batik dress and a string of Venetian glass trade beads that were made circa 1740s - 1850s. Be sure to dive into their website. They have small collection online for sale that will give you a great idea of the amazing-ness not pictured. Also, take some time to read the blog posts - they will be sure to intrigue and put a smile on your face.

Finishing up my own beaded necklace today inspired by the one I purchased.

Had a great time shooting plants and animals on this trip. It seemed like every time I saw a wildflower I might want to picture, there was a cute little bee or butterfly to accompany it once I got closer. We had never seen bison before and had multiple run ins with them.

This whole last week my internet was down. I spent the first few days cursing Comcast and getting completely frustrated but finally took it as a blessing and got a lot of stuff done around here. Editing 500+ photos from our road trip last month has been a nice break from trolling Etsy and praying for sales.

First up - Jackson. We stayed in a cute little Koa "Kabin" for a few days... hung out around town and gazed at the Teton mountain range views.

I've got to admit, I'm terrible when it comes to looking at ... scrutinizing rather, images I take of myself. Working with models just didn't seem feasible this week and as you all know by now, I've been doing some serious slacking on getting shredded items back in the shop. I think the self analyzing may also have something to do with me feeling blah about my dreadlocks lately. Been growing these babies out for six years and honestly, I can't even remember how it felt to have combed hair! I've talked about chopping them off before and I always chicken out... Any gals out there have experience with getting really beautiful hair extensions? I am terrified of having really short hair.

I had originally intended on having three new colors but unfortunately I have yet to master the perfect brown. So besides the addition of (bright!) orange and yellow, the color palette will be mostly the same. I've stepped up my game and started using all permanent fiber reactive dyes now so that means no more fading, even after repeated washings.

Been working on several projects since I got back from Arizona last week... but it seems, no matter what I do, I can't seem to re-gain the momentum that I had this time last year for creating, photographing and selling my work. Do you ever over think something so much it becomes damn near impossible to take the first step to accomplish it? Creative blocks are the absolute worst but I've got to push through it.
Scarf update is happening next week if it kills me - mark my words, I am serious this time!

Asheville, part 5 : Penland

Before I start posting images from my road trip last week, I want to talk about Asheville a little more. During the time that we visited, Stephen's brother Corey was finishing up a two week glass blowing course at Penland School of Craft. We drove up the mountain to check it out one afternoon and I immediately decided that I would love to take glass and textile classes there. Unfortunately, they were in the process of changing over to a new session so we didn't get to see much of the art that had been made the two weeks prior. Although, Corey took us on a tour through all the different studios so we could see the facilities and there were plenty of art pieces here and there to appreciate. In each craft department, they have a shelf where artists can place unsatisfied work. If you want any of the pieces, you simply donate a few dollars right there at the shelf to said charity and take home whatever you want. We brought back four gorgeous opalescent colored glass vases, that in our eyes are perfection.

Remember how I mentioned I was going out of town last week? If you follow me on Twitter you probably saw my overzealous tweets everyday. I met up with my mama and sister in Jackson Hole and we made our way across parts of Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona in 7 days. I've spent a fair amount of time in the southwest but never explored much further north than Arizona and New Mexico. It'll never cease to amaze me how the land changes in our country!
We stayed in Koa campground cabins, saw the Tetons, explored Yellowstone, had photo shoots with bison, sat in a cowboy bar, chilled at a hot spring in Mammoth, went thrifting (my colorful loot pictured above), got intrigued and then disgusted by Vegas, bought souvenirs, drove through Zion National Park... and often got on each other's nerves - but it was definitely worth it.

As usual, I have more than enough photos to share (not taken with my phone) so I'll be uploading those once I'm back and settled in Richmond.

... some proof i'm getting things made around here! ...

- huge chunky cream scarf that i'm excited to finish. i tend to take up knitting projects in the fall and i'm happy that i might actually finish this one before it's cold enough to wear. also, never thought i was a fan of thick, woolly yarn before but it rules.

- suede box braid for Stephen's old wire wrap pendant he gave me. when i first met him he was wearing this on a hemp necklace. gem wraps are really popular within our music scene... at first i wasn't a fan of the way they look, but have grown to appreciate them a whole bunch.

- bulletin board created for the studio. i know its going to make huge difference being able to tack up inspirations, lists, etc.

- tie dyed leather cord. hoping to use this with some jewelry pieces.

- glass and fiber dream catchers. i've been making a few everyday lately. just listed two... here and here. expect to see more variations on these for necklaces and earrings soon!

- shredded scarves will be re-photographed this week. four new styles and some new colors! i'm trying to convince myself i can update the shop before i leave on sunday. let's see how it goes...

Asheville, part 4 : Allie's space.

Inside this little cabin, one of my best girlfriends Allie has made home over these past few months. Not too long ago she left her corporate job to pursue art making full time. Creating posters and live paintings to sell at festivals this past summer, she has successfully started to make a name for herself as Azura.

Asheville, part 3 : Halls Seven Acres.

While in Asheville last week we stayed on the property that our great friends from the band Papadosio rent. 20 minutes from downtown and just far enough off a main road, I fell in love with this place. A main house, cabin, two ponds and tons of little touches around the property give it great character.

Home from Asheville and I have so much to share! First off, we visited my glass supplier, Mountain Glass Arts in person. I've ordered all my supplies thus far through their online shop and while I was already impressed by their quality and kindness - seeing them in person lived up to my expectations and more.

Like a kid in a candy shop. So many amazing colors, so many difficult decisions! My favorite rods I brought home are a discontinued shade of "Mother of Green Pearl". Very excited about it's iridescent quality. And how about that glass geode in the last photo? Amazing, right?

Camp Barefoot (and some earth shake...)

This festival will always hold a really special place in my heart. It's small scale and gorgeous location in Bartow, West Virginia is really just the perfect way to end every summer. Only 3 or so hours from Richmond, we basically know everyone that attends.

The pink ring sitting backwards on my pinky (with the amazing tourmaline metal inlay pendant) is my new goodie. I've treated myself to something special at every festival this year and this is, handsdown, the most exciting thing I've bought. An antique glass dome with diamond cuts along the side, blue specks of shine inside and set in sterling silver - I am obsessed with it! And speaking of pink ... we totally dyed four of my dreads with manic panic in the creek one afternoon. It was hilarious and it turned out really great. I'm thinking about dying a few more.

It's been really interesting to watch the vendors and traveling artists this summer... the nomad lifestyle they lead really intrigues me and I think I might consider actually purchasing booth spots next year. The amount of rings I sold to people in person this summer, exceeded every sale I've ever made on Etsy. Each time someone told me my cluster rings were something they had never seen before or how inspired they were - my heart lit up. I had been missing my family of creative people from art school this past winter but I think I've found an even better niche now.

With the season being over, I'm working towards giving Etsy my full attention again and setting up some new shop stock for the approaching holidays. We aren't going to stop moving around anytime soon though. On thursday we are heading down to Asheville, North Carolina to see Stephen's brother at Penland and stay with some wonderful friends in their country home!

ps - incase you're wondering, just a little while ago we all felt that 5.9 magnitude earthquake pretty strongly here in Richmond. Stephen and I were sitting at a stop light and thought my car was about to explode. Never thought I'd ever get to feel the earth shake so hard before moving out west. Crazy!

You may recognize Emily from my previous festival posts and images on flickr. I have a ridiculous amount of pictures with this lady, mainly because she's my best friend but also because she has one of the most bold looks and personality of everyone I know. Lately she's been making these crystal wrapped seed bead necklaces and selling them at festivals. I'm hoping to help her get an Etsy shop up and running in the fall, so I wanted to try and document what she's done so far. I feel like my camera focusing skills were lacking this day but I still enjoy the color.

I've talked about Leora several times here on the blog and it's clear why. She's amazing and her work is amazing. She was the first person I "met" and traded with on Etsy and her jewelry just keeps getting better. She sent me this quartz pyramid necklace recently and I'm obsessed with it!

I got really nostalgic over the weekend when I saw this image on pinterest and immediately thought of my childhood and grandmother. My gramma taught me how to knit when I was 8 years old. I remember her taking me to Ben Franklin one afternoon, buying me size 9 knitting needles, pink cotton Sugar'n Cream brand yarn and the having me copy her dish cloth pattern onto an index card (my handwriting has improved since then!).

When I went to go dig out the pattern the other day, I found myself re-visiting my first knitting projects that had been stashed away in my old ballet bag. My craft mostly revolved around my family of stuffed animals and Beanie Babie collection. No furry friend could be without a knit patchwork blanket and outerware! I'm pretty sure, the white bear was an areobics instructor - hence the headband. The snake is my favorite. I remember knitting while hanging out in the car with my mom, waiting for my sister to get out of her Orchestra rehearsal... I had just figured out the purl stitch and was so frustrated by the edges turning in, but Mama suggested I make it into a snake and I thought it was brilliant. No doubt, my mother was the first to initiate happy accidents in craft/art making for me.

I wanted to share mainly because I think this stuff is pretty funny but also, because I feel older lately and it's kind of crazy. I'm so excited to give this stuff to my children one day!

Now, a project more suited for a twenty four year old...
I think I'm going to give this Herringbone stitch a go.

So I realize I've been having a sale for a while. Maybe too long? I've been feeling super generous this summer though and as of this morning I decided I might be getting sick of pastels. Or at least the color palette I've been dying cotton with for these past two years. Time to switch it up and order new dyes. I thought I might continue to make new designs out of all this fabric but really, I just need to get rid of it and start fresh.

A few things I've acquired so far on our summer travels...

- Beautiful and intricate wrap skirt woven by a traditional artisan in Guatemala.

I find Justa fair trade practices very admirable...

- Turquoise embellished moccasins created by the small team behind Tread Light Gear. I did a trade with them a while back for their Maori sandals and had been day dreaming about their mocs ever since. I still need to wear them in a bit but they are already the most wonderful feeling shoes I own. Still wishing I had taken some pictures of their booth at Electric Forest. The variety of styles and craftsmanship in person was so impressive.

All Good was the first music festival I ever attended and loved, and although I had my doubts these last few years as it's size increased drastically - camping VIP at the top of the main stage hill this time around proved successful. The line-up was perfect and the sound quality? Amazing. I love my festival family... each time we come home from a weekend of camping, I day dream a little more about moving to the country with friends.

All of our hearts go out to Nicole Miller and her family - a 20 year old woman who lost her life on the mountaintop early Sunday morning due to a truck that lost control on a hill side. In it's 15 years, All Good has never faced such an innocent tragedy. We all need to cherish every moment we have. ♥ ♥ ♥

I didn't find time to list any new items in the shop before All Good but I did make a bunch of new cluster rings to sell on the mountaintop.

We will have a three week break till our next fest once we're home and it's going to be full of shredding cotton. I've received a lot of convos lately asking if I'll bring the t-shirts back into the shop anytime soon. The answer is yes! But I'm not rushing it at all. I want the new wears to be really unique.

Rarely do I get excited for Fall clothes, but Isobel and Cleo is killing it!
Cold temperatures would be totally welcome right now if I was sporting these knits.

Charlotte and I did a trade a year-ish ago and she sent me one of these scarves. It's my absolute favorite cold weather wrap around. Her technique is flawless! When we had spoke last, she was studying in Glasgow, Scotland about to embark on exciting projects thanks to her Professional Development Grant awarded by the Scottish Arts Council.

Electric Forest part 3: bright and happy.

It's been a week since we left Michigan and we're just about the hit the road again. Thanks to our kind friends and the ring box pictured in this post, we've conjured up two VIP tickets to ALL GOOD festival in West Virginia for this coming Thursday.
Every weekend full of beautiful people and live music? Fine by me.

Electric Forest part 2: at night...

There's really not much to say about these woods except you should go next year, get lost for hours and see for yourself. Walking through the Sherwood Forest at night mind-boggles everyone in a different way. All of these images were taken on the two main paths which lead off in many directions towards interactive installations involving light and sound.

A really cool connection was made the last day we were there involving Stephen and I meeting the person responsible for the triangle (come to find out, entitled the "Whompilator") in the second to last photo. We were hanging out in the artist lounge one afternoon with our friends from Papadosio (I have to throw that in there cause they are amazing... *and so was the artist lounge pool*) and a guy came up to Stephen and asked if he remembered him. Come to find out, his name is Brian Pinkham and they went to high school together. He plays a heavy role in the artist collab Photonic Bliss, responsible for making some seriously badass light installations! If you don't already know, my Stephen makes LED hula hoops under the name LEDCreations on Etsy. He and Brian, never having really communicated in high school found themselves connected in so many ways at once. The forest felt really small and powerful all of a sudden, it was a pretty amazing thing to witness. I'm sure their paths will cross again.

On a related note, Papadosio is putting on their festival Rootwire in Logan, Ohio - this August 4th. It's going to be an amazing family gathering of artistic people. I'm so excited to attend. Stephen has been working on a project for that weekend - double dutch jump ropes with LEDs inside! Could quite possibly be too cool for school...

Electric Forest part 1: sampling of the Sherwood Forest...

Electric Forest this past week was undoubtedly the most amazing festival I have attended in my 4 years of festie travels. Many friends of ours (new and old) were able to join efforts in a large camping area that made the perfect home for four days in between four stages of music, the illuminated by night and relaxing by day - Sherwood Forest, incredible artwork, vendors, a badass water park (!) and many more aspects of the JJ Ranch venue that I never expected.

We took many pictures but there was no way we could capture everything in it's glory. For now I want to share with you all the Reincarnation installation created inside the forest. The team who made it travel to different venues and volunteer prior to events - scoring the land for scrap metal, objects and natural elements. At all different parts of the day, this installation took on new life. I captured small bits of it the second day we were there, a little after I had woken up and the flowers had been laid down. It had just rained and the dew and the silence I experienced at this time are something I will never forget.

Docufest did an amazing job covering the fest in four parts. Here is part four which shares a little bit of above:

My new projects, the tie dye tote and treasure pouch necklaces are now in the SHOP! I must admit, while it was exciting to finish and photograph these yesterday, it was just as exciting to put them away afterwards. I only made 8 totes and 4 pouches but I'm so tired of looking at the fabric. I get this way about stuff I'm making a lot (especially knitting projects) and I have to keep reminding myself, it will be new to all of you! I hope somebody will like them. I enjoyed figuring out how to make the tote bag reversible with no seams exposed and the pouch necklace came about after I made these. Several people told me they would love to keep crystals inside, so here you go :) I'll be able to make several more of those if they sell.

We are heading out the door to Electric Forest (!!!) tonight and will be back from our travels this time next week. Anything that sells between now and then will ship as soon as I get home. Once we are back I'm going to be working towards getting my shredded scarf styles back in the shop!

Ilana had been taking a leave of absence from her blog for many months while in grad school. She's recently back and sewing up a storm!

This Multi Ikat Lizzie Dress is sooo pretty. I am seriously in love with the fabric and the maxi length is wonderful. So inspiring! I need to find some fabric stores around Richmond that are more unique than your typical Jo-Ann craft store. I wonder if they exist?

This past week I've been spending a lot of time working on simple sewing projects. After making the little pouches for the recent jewelry update, I think I got a little sewing machine bug in me. Probably the most easy thing in the world, but I struggled for a whole day just trying to pin something and visualize what it would look like when I turned it inside out. Messed it up twice! Baby steps... eventually I would love to start making dresses. I tie dyed this fabric several years ago and it's just been hanging out looking pretty. Nothing too amazing but I'm hoping to list what I've made in the shop on Monday or Tuesday!

Also, an exciting collaboration... I've just sent off 32 cluster rings to a graduating Australian fashion student for her final collection. I don't think it will be till the fall but I'm so excited to share her work! It's gorgeous.

Remember how I mentioned Stephen and I were going quartz mining on the way to Wakarusa last week? Yeah, that was a bust. After driving two hours out of the way, we found ourselves deep in the woods staring at Arrowhead Crystal Mine's closed sign. We could've gone digging somewhere else but it was already late in the afternoon and it just wasn't meant to be.

All throughout Mount Ida there are shops and stands with locals selling rocks. Each had a ridiculous amount of quartz ( in which they all *claim* they dig up in their own back yards), in addition to pieces shipped from all over the world. Bleh. It was cool to see but I didn't buy anything. We had our heart set on finding our own! At least Stephen got to "mine" in the sandbox for a minute ;)

We're home again! It was a wonderful seven days away. Minus the scorching heat, a wicked sunburn and a poor chicken soul that I may or may not have killed on a back road in Arkansas (I'm still in denial), I couldn't have asked for a better time.

- fabric fabric fabric: i've been holding onto this stuff for years. there's no doubt i love pouches and totes. thinking it's time i get better at sewing and make my own.

I've been struggling with the fact that my work is very springtime and spring is basically over. I don't know if I'll ever be able to produce seasonal lines like other designers. Maybe if I had extra helping hands, but I'm stubborn and I want to do everything myself.

Stephen had several days off this past weekend so we drove to Virginia Beach for a few days, then a friends combined graduation / 21st birthday party on the York river. It was great to get away for a few days. I've been keeping myself cooped up in the house too much since the weather turned nice.

The cluster ring pictured at the beach above was a happy accident. I thought I was making one of these but somehow got translucent yellow mixed with my clear glass. The combination with lilac is so nice. The picture doesn't do it justice but take my word for it, the sunshine loves these colors together!
This week is full of work... having a good time preparing new pieces for the shop update. I'm thinking second week in June now but I'm not stressing it. Will post some progress pics soon.
This coming weekend we're embarking on a much more serious road trip!

Artist Gidon Bing at his studio in Auckland New Zealand via The Selby.

Besides the fact that his sculptures are gorgeous!, his studio sits on the Mediterranean Sea. I can't imagine having an unproductive day there. When I looked into his work further I discovered these modern miniatures he built for Karen Walker paints. Aaa-mazing.

Bre does it again. I've been following the evolution of Scout & Catalogue since it began with pillows in Mexico just a little over a year ago. The success of her accessories line since then has been amazing, she recently had to put a hold on most items in her summer collection due to an overwhelming response. A few weeks ago Stephen found this 1972 Raleigh Sport on craigslist for me and spent his days off fixing her up. Besides some rust left over on the rims, she looks like a brand new bike! I just need to get a couple reflectors and I'm good to go. Isn't she a beauty?! We need to give her a name.

Another impressive project. I've started a DIY! folder on flickr just for his handy work (last endeavor, the platform bed). Now I'm trying to get him to build me a shelf/cork/chalkboard contraption for the studio...

- Just a few happys: gemstones from Hiddenite, metallic paint markers and colors pencils...

- Brand new glass colors came in the mail. yes. yes!!!

- Hang tags for shredded shirts and scarves.

- New jewelry production.

- Seriously obsessed with this mint color. My nails are painted to match right now...

- Masking tape in every amazing color from Pretty Tape. It's the little things. :)

In other words - this past Monday, I let out a little ramble on twitter about going away for a while, a leave of absence... hiding from the internet if you will.

For months I've been struggling with spending too much time online. Allowing other's ideas and imagery to over saturate my own. Obviously this is an amazing thing... the net is how I make a living and meet creative people, etc, etc - but sometimes, I allow myself to get sucked in to a point of no return. A certain level of image compassion fatigue (thank you art school, contemporary concepts photo class) sets in and I'm dumbfounded, un-inspired, exhausted and maybe even jealous in a way.

To avoid this is easy right? Just get off the freaking internet! Not as easy as it sounds folks. But I'm doing pretty good. Every day this week I've woken up, made my coffee and instead of jumping into the never-ending world of blogs, twitter, facebook and etsy-ness - I've lit up the torch and melted glass until 1:00 pm instead. I've created more new things this past week than I have in a looong time.

Over the past two years, I've visualized and re-visualized Urban Revisions in my head a million times. It's sad to admit but I haven't really done anything about it (everyone is their worst critic, right?). Well, I've finally decided to just take a break and enjoy the process again. If you take a look at the shop, you'll see everything is ready to ship and there's a lot on sale too. By the beginning of June, I'm hoping to have a fresh look and new items to be excited about. Thanks for reading. I needed a rant.

The summer music festival season is approaching quickly! I went through my photo folders from last year's Wakarusa, All Good and Camp Barefoot this morning and got really excited. Not the best quality, everything here was shot with a crappy little camera to avoid lugging my SLR around while laughing, dancing and having too much fun for 3 to 4 days at a time.

I think I'm gonna go for it this summer though. I go through stages of camera fright... but what's the point of having a sweet camera if you're not going to take it to fun places?!
